Just 12 hours after resigning, Nitish Kumar takes oath as Bihar CM again with BJP's support

Nitish Kumar on Thursday took oath as Bihar Chief Minister at the head of a JD-U-BJP government, within hours of dumping the Grand Alliance. A little more than 12 hours after Kumar, 66, resigned to break ranks with his allies -- Lalu Yadav's RJD party and the Congress -- he was back in office after being sworn in by Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi at the Raj Bhawan.

The Raj Bhavan here echoed with chants of "Nitish Kumar Zindabad" as Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi administered the oath to Nitish Kumar. Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi was also sworn in, and will be the deputy chief minister.

A political crisis looms in the state of Bihar as Nitish Kumar has decided to step down from his post as the Chief Minister of Bihar.

"I have done the work to the best of my ability. It's not possible to work in this environment, I tried to find out a solution. When I supported demonetisation and actions against benami property, how could I support benami property allegations against Tejashwi? I asked him to explain if there was a conspiracy to frame him. Since he and Lalu didn't explain anything, I had no option but to step down," stated Nitish Kumar, addressing the media, announcing his resignation.

This is the JD-U President's second innings in the last two years. He snapped ties late on Wednesday with Grand Alliance partners Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress over corruption charges against RJD leader and Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav.

"Whatever decision we have taken will be in the interest of Bihar and of its people. It will ensure development and justice. This is a collective decision. I ensure that our commitment is towards the people of Bihar," Kumar told reporters after the swearing-in.

Nitish Kumar took the oath in Hindi. The governor has asked Kumar to prove his majority on the floor of the House tomorrow. Here’s how various politicians reacted on this:
