Modi Government cleared Bill that proposes 'Triple Talaaq' a crime

The NDA government has cleared the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, that seeks to make instant triple talaq (Talaq-e-biddat) illegal and a punishable offence. The bill to make Talaq-ebiddat void and illegal has provisions for imprisonment and fine for anyone invoking it.

The bill will cover instant triple talaq delivered in any form — whether delivered orally, including telephone or a mobile call, or in writing or through electronic medium like Watsapp or SMS — illegal.

In August, the Supreme Court said in a landmark ruling that the practice of Muslim men uttering "talaq" three times for an instant divorce is unconstitutional. The proposed bill, called the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, is a "priority agenda" for the government, people familiar with the matter said. Home Minister Rajnath Singh led a group of ministers to draft the bill.

Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party and the Trinamool Congress, who count on Muslim voters, have argued against a ban, and said reform should be encouraged from within the community and not imposed on it. However, they have endorsed the Supreme Court verdict.

Many Muslim countries have banned "triple talaq", including Pakistan and conservative Saudi Arabia. Twitterati welcomed the decision and also responded in a positive way. Have a look:
